An air source heat pump can be working correctly while still using more electricity than it should. The cause is often not a single dramatic fault. Small changes in airflow, water temperature, sensors, controls or the refrigerant circuit can gradually reduce the heat produced for each unit of electricity used.

Maintenance cannot turn an unsuitable system into a suitable one, and it cannot overcome poor insulation or incorrect design. It can, however, identify the parts of the system that are stopping it operating as intended. That distinction matters when deciding whether a service is worthwhile.

Where efficiency is commonly lost

The outdoor unit needs a clear, unrestricted path for air to pass across its heat exchanger. Dirt, leaves and other debris can reduce heat transfer. When that happens, the system has to work harder to extract the same useful heat, and the fan and compressor may run for longer. A visual check can identify an obvious obstruction, but cleaning needs to be carried out carefully because fins and electrical components can be damaged.

The water side is just as important. An air source heat pump normally performs more efficiently when it can deliver heat at the lowest water temperature leaving the unit that still keeps the property comfortable. If controls are set too aggressively, or if the heating system is not balancing heat correctly around the property, the heat pump may be producing hotter water than necessary. That can reduce its efficiency, measured by COP, because the system needs more electricity to produce the required heat.

Sensors and controls can create a similar problem without showing an obvious fault code. A sensor that is reading inaccurately, a thermostat placed in a poor position, or a schedule that repeatedly starts and stops the system can all lead to inefficient operation. Maintenance gives us the opportunity to compare the displayed readings with the temperatures and operating conditions we would expect to see on site.

Why refrigerant and electrical checks matter

The pipework carrying refrigerant is central to how an air source heat pump transfers heat. A leak can reduce performance before the system stops working altogether. You might notice longer operating periods, less heat delivered into the property, unusual noises or a fault appearing on the controller. Those signs do not prove a refrigerant issue, because controls, airflow and water circulation can create similar symptoms, but they justify proper testing rather than adjusting settings at random.

Electrical connections and components also affect reliable operation. Loose connections, damage to the electrical shut-off switch or unusual test results can create faults and place unnecessary stress on the equipment. An inspection is not simply about finding a failed part. It is about identifying conditions that could cause a failure or affect how the compressor, inverter and circulation components operate together.

Refrigerant work and electrical testing are not suitable DIY tasks. Do not remove covers, interfere with the refrigerant circuit or attempt to reset a recurring electrical fault. You can safely note controller messages, changes in comfort, unusual sounds and when the problem occurs. That information helps us investigate without encouraging unsafe intervention.

What maintenance can and cannot change

A well-planned maintenance visit should separate an efficiency issue from a design issue. If the heat pump is clean, the refrigerant circuit is sound, sensors are giving credible readings and the controls are correctly configured, further gains may depend on the property itself. Heat loss through the walls, roof or windows, radiators or underfloor heating that are too small, restricted pipes or poorly arranged heating zones can limit performance even when the heat pump has no fault.

Where the system allows it, we can review the water temperatures, control settings and operating schedules against the way you use the property. The aim is not to make one setting as low as possible. It is to find a setting that delivers the required comfort without making the compressor run unnecessarily hard or for excessive periods.

This is also why a service report matters. It should record what was checked, what readings were found, which adjustments were made and whether further work is needed. If efficiency remains poor, that record helps distinguish a control adjustment from a repair, a circulation problem or a wider property improvement.

When to arrange an efficiency check

Contact us if your electricity use appears to have increased, the property is taking longer to reach its normal temperature, the system is running continuously without delivering the expected comfort, or the controller is showing repeated warnings. Do not wait for a complete breakdown before asking for advice. Early investigation can prevent a minor restriction or control problem becoming wider damage or a more disruptive repair.
