Suitability depends on the whole property, not just the heating system

An air source heat pump is not assessed in isolation. The important question is how well the proposed system matches your property’s heat loss, radiators or underfloor heating, hot water requirements and available space.

That is why two homes next to each other can produce different design recommendations. A modern house with good insulation may need a different system arrangement from an older Lancaster terrace or a detached rural property in Cumbria. Before choosing equipment, we look at how your home actually uses and loses heat.

Start with the parts of the home that hold in heat

The more heat a property loses through its walls, roof, windows, floors and air gaps, the more work the heating system has to do. Insulation is therefore not a minor detail. It affects the size of the heat pump, the running pattern and the temperature needed from the radiators or underfloor heating.

Older properties require closer attention because their construction can vary significantly. A solid-walled stone house, a traditionally built terrace and a later cavity-walled property do not behave in the same way. Wall construction, loft insulation, suspended floors, glazing and draughts all influence the result.

This does not mean every older home is unsuitable. It means the design must reflect the building rather than assume that a standard replacement will work. Where practical, improving insulation and reducing uncontrolled draughts can make the proposed system easier to size and operate. It can also improve comfort independently of the heating upgrade.

Look at each room, not just the floor area

A property’s total floor area is not enough to specify a heat pump. Rooms lose heat at different rates depending on their external walls, windows, ceilings, floors and position within the building.

A corner room with two exposed walls may need more heat than an internal room of the same size. An extension with large glazing can behave differently from the original part of the house. Rooms above an unheated space can also have different requirements from rooms surrounded by heated accommodation.

This is why a proper heat-loss assessment needs to consider rooms individually. It helps identify where existing radiators or underfloor heating may struggle and prevents the system from being selected simply by comparing it with the output of the boiler it replaces.

Existing radiators can change the design

Many boiler systems heat radiators with relatively high flow temperatures. Heat pumps are generally designed to deliver warmth more steadily at lower water temperatures. The question is not whether a radiator works at all, but whether it can provide enough heat under the proposed operating conditions.

Some existing radiators may be suitable, particularly in rooms with lower heat loss or where the emitters are already generous for the space. Others may need to be replaced with larger or more suitable radiators. A room that has always felt cooler than the rest of the house deserves particular attention, because its existing emitter may already be close to its limit.

Underfloor heating can work well with lower-temperature systems, but fitting it throughout a property is not always practical. Floor construction, finished floor levels, room layout and disruption all matter. In some homes, a carefully designed combination of existing and upgraded emitters is the more sensible route.

Consider how the home is occupied

Heat pumps are usually planned around maintaining a stable level of comfort rather than rapidly heating a cold property from scratch. Your normal heating habits therefore matter during the design process.

A home occupied throughout the day may have different control requirements from a property that is empty for long periods. Open-plan areas, bedrooms that are rarely used, home working spaces and rooms with separate heating preferences all affect how heating is divided between rooms and how the controls are set.

The hot water arrangement also needs to fit the household. A heat pump system may require a suitable hot water cylinder and enough space for the associated equipment. The location of that cylinder, the amount of space for the main heating equipment and the route for pipework can be significant in homes where storage space is limited.

External space and access are part of suitability

The outdoor unit needs an appropriate location with room around it for airflow, servicing and safe operation. The route from the outside unit to the indoor components matters too. Long or complicated pipe runs, difficult access and restricted working areas can influence the installation design.

In a compact Lancaster terrace, the challenge may be finding a suitable external position and routing services without compromising the property. In a larger Cumbrian home, the issue may be distance between buildings, access to the room housing the equipment or integrating the heat pump with an existing heating layout.

The proposed position should be considered alongside noise, access, drainage and the appearance of the property. These are design questions to resolve before equipment is ordered, not problems to discover during installation.

What to prepare before a survey

You can make the assessment more useful by noting which rooms are difficult to heat, whether any radiators have been altered, where the current boiler and hot water cylinder are located, and how your household normally uses heating and hot water.

Also mention extensions, converted rooms, planned building work and any insulation improvements already completed. These details help us understand whether the property being surveyed will remain representative of how you intend to use it.
